Of the many chateaux along the Loire, we chose to visit Villandry which is especially known for its magnificent gardens. There are six different types of garden and ten fulltime gardeners to look after them. We also really enjoyed the chateau itself – grandly decorated but still with a feeling that you could actually live in it. The ceiling in the picture below was brought back in thousands of pieces from Istanbul by one of the 18th-century owners, and reassembled in the drawing room.
