Sarlat-la-Canéda

On our last trip to France in 1999 one of our favourite spots had been the market town of Sarlat-le-Canéda in the Dordogne. Many towns have small weekly markets for local fresh produce or tourist kitsch but Sarlat feels different as the whole of the central city is filled with market stalls on Saturday, selling absolutely everything you could think of. It is a huge affair; you have to get there early to get a decent parking place, and the crowds flock in by mid-morning. We got up at 6.30am to get there by 8.00am, and I’m glad to say we enjoyed it just as much the second time.

A typically gorgeous street scene, but also, on the LH side, the entrance to the studio and gallery of Veronique Guinard, an artist whose work I love.   I bought some small watercolours of hers to take back home with me last time, and it was great to drop in and catch up with Veronique 11 years on.

  1. Hi, just catching up on your travels. Whoo - it must have been a while since I last looked, I'm exhausted! I hope you are not finding it too tiring, with all the travelling around, and you are both still enjoying your grand adventure. Keep safe, Claire.

  2. Hey, I'm back on that street corner with the paella pans. I know the geese well too. We stupidly parked at the far end of the square on Friday night. They built the market around us and we couldn't leave till about 4pm Saturday, after paying a fine. We got to know the market rather well. Such a lovely town. We so enjoyed staying.Your trip is magic.
Love the colour themes. I think I will steal that idea for the next trip, though I am hoping the predominant colours for NZ in three days will be blue sea and green fields.
